Dachau Concentration Camp

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site

This first major Bavarian concentration camp was opened by the Nazis in 1933. Under the command of the notorious, Theodor Eicke, it became the model for every other concentration camp constructed during the Third Reich.

Dachau Concentration Camp

Eicke, Head of the SS Guards and Inspector of all Concentration camps, promoted the fiendish philosophy of ‘tolerance is weakness,’ leading to the persecution, torture and ultimate death of millions. Many thousands of Jews, Poles, Czechs, French, Russians, Dissidents, Gypsies, Jehovah Witnesses, Homosexuals, Communists, Priests and simply unemployed passed through the gates of Dachau concentration camp. All became victims as they walked through the gates... ...mocked by the infamous inscription ‘ARBEIT MACHT FREI.’ ...freedom through work.

In atrociously overcrowded conditions, prisoners suffered from overwork, starvation, disease and exposure; experiencing indescribable humiliation and torture under the command of the SS guards.

Countless victims suffered and died through medical experiments, mass executions and unadulterated brutality.

From the Dachau camp vast numbers of Jews were transported to their horrendous fate in the Auschwitz gas chambers.

KZ Dachau

Over 206,000 prisoners were registered at Dachau and approximately 32,000 deaths were recorded. However, since several groups of prisoners were never officially registered, we can only guess at the real numbers who suffered in the desperate conditions of this concentration camp.

Today, Dachau Concentration Camp is a Memorial Site, honouring all who suffered and died there. It is a haunting memorial to all those imprisoned in similar conditions under the ruthless control of the Third Reich. Visiting Dachau Camp is a profoundly moving experience. There is much to learn there. It is a place of homage and pilgrimage – a constant reminder for future generations.

During this intensive 3 hour guided tour professional experienced guides will explain Dachau’s history and the meaning behind the various memorials with dignity, objectivity and respect.
