Guided Sightseeing Tours - Herrenchiemsee Palace was King Ludwig’s final and most extravagant project, costing more than his other two castles (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof) combined. Herrenchiemsee Castle Tour Bavaria.
Herrenchiemsee Palace was King Ludwig’s final and most extravagant project, costing more than his other two castles (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof) combined. Erected in 1878, this regal palace stands on Herrenchiemsee Island in the centre of Bavaria’s largest lake. It is set in French stylized gardens with imposing marble fountains and long winding pathways which lead down to the shores of Lake Chiemsee.
Built in the image of Versailles, the Schloss was a tribute to the Sun King (King Louis XIV of France), whom Ludwig regarded as the epitome of monarchy. Although smaller than Versailles, the opulence and splendour of the palace interior equals, if not surpasses, that of the French original.
One of the most impressive rooms in the interior is the Hall of Mirrors lit by two thousand candles, displayed in the 44 full sized standing candelabras and 33 chandeliers. Huge gilded mirrors reflect the light from seventeen arched windows in this amazing hall, creating a vision of pure enchantment.
There is an entire room decorated with priceless Meissen porcelain and a masterpiece of exquisite flowers, so delicately formed that you will believe they are real.
A colossal marble Roman bath covered with frescoes of Venus completes the regal fantasy.
The elegance of Herrenchiemsee is utterly captivating - a sensual and visual delight.
Nearby is the Ludwig II Museum containing impressive pieces from both the Residence in Munich and Linderhof castle. Here you also find an interesting display of personal photographs of King Ludwig II. These portray Ludwig throughout his life - first as a carefree happy child, later as an exceptionally handsome young man and finally as a solemn, withdrawn recluse.
Before returning to the mainland by ferry, we take the opportunity to sail across the lake to the other island, Frauenchiemsee. Here you can visit the Benedictine Cloister of Frauenworth, founded in 772 AD, purchase some of the Nuns’ famous home brewed liquor and enjoy the best food you are ever likely to taste during your entire vacation.
Then it’s time to catch the boat back to the mainland and return to Munich.
Duration of Tour - Approx 10 hrs.
